How to play guessNow — the history guessing game

A real archival photograph is revealed to you piece by piece. Slide to the year you think it was taken and see how long your 300 HP survives.

What it is

guessNow is a free history guessing game that runs in your browser. You are shown a genuine archival photograph, revealed progressively from 10% to 100% over about ten seconds, and you slide a control to the year you believe it was taken. There is nothing to download and no account to create.

The HP mechanic

You start a run with 300 HP. Every year you are away from the correct answer costs you that many HP. Guess 1960 when it was 1955 and you lose 5 HP. Guess 1800 when it was 1945 and you lose 145. A run ends when your HP runs out.

The two modes

Adaptive Climb builds a streak and gets progressively harder as you improve. The Daily Challenge gives every player the same five moments each day, with one result to share.

Why the photographs are real

Every image in the game is a genuine archive photograph. Each one is shown with its photographer, licence and source. This is not a detail — it is the point, and it is what makes the game usable in a classroom.
