G guessNow

guessNow for teachers — a free history source-analysis activity

A free browser activity for history classes: real archival photographs with photographer, licence and source recorded. Nothing to install, no accounts.

A twenty second activity, a whole lesson if you want it

guessNow shows students a real archival photograph and asks them to date it. One round takes about twenty seconds, so it works as a starter, a plenary, or a running feature across a term. It runs in any browser on a phone, a tablet or a projector. There is no signup, nothing to install, and no student data is collected.

Built for source criticism, not just recall

Because every photograph carries its photographer, date, licence and source, the reveal is itself a source-criticism exercise. Ask students not just what year they chose, but what in the image made them choose it, and what they would need to check. The archive page lets you pick a specific era to match whatever you are teaching.

No stock photography, no AI images

Every image is a genuine archive photograph with verifiable provenance. That matters when you are teaching students to interrogate sources: an AI-generated or stock image has nothing to interrogate.

Getting started

Open guessnow.fun on a projector and play a round together, or browse the archive and pick photographs from the era you are studying. Nothing needs to be installed and no account is required, so there is no permission step.
